New York Life Insurance is acquiring a controlling interest in Sanus Corp. Health Systems, the largest privately held health-care company in the country. New York Life has invested $54 million in Sanus stock; its expenditures should total $75 million by 1988. Sanus of New York had been jointly owned by McDonnell Douglas Corp., General American Life Insurance and a group of individuals including Sanus’ management and other employees. Sanus operates preferred provider organizations in six markets, including Long Beach, and HMOs in Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, St. Louis, Washington, Baltimore and New York.
