A parade of 13 battleships under the Golden Gate Bridge and an exhibition by the Blue Angels precision flying team kicked off San Francisco’s seventh annual “Fleet Week.” The salute to the U.S. Navy is scheduled to continue through Thursday with a fireworks display, recruiting program, rock concert and a Navy ball at the San Francisco Hilton. A 10-minute protest by a ragtag Peace Navy also was planned by the Greenpeace organization, which opposes the use of nuclear weapons at sea. A federal judge earlier in the week ruled that the convoy of canoes, kayaks and powerboats could not be prevented from staging the protest, despite Navy fears of possible terrorism.
