Frankfurt, West Germany, police Thursday were holding a man they suspected of starting a fire that caused an estimated $60-million worth of damage to the city’s opera house. Police said the fire, which gutted the stage area, was started deliberately early Thursday. Only an iron fire curtain stopped flames from ravaging the 1,400-seat auditorium. Hilmar Hoffmann, the city’s culture officer, described the blaze as a catastrophe.
