Monte Vista Rallies in Water Polo

Rich Calder scored with 14 seconds remaining, lifting Monte Vista High School to a 10-9 victory over Rancho Buena Vista Friday in a San Diego Section water polo first-round match at Mt. Carmel.
Calder’s goal, into the upper right-hand corner of the net from six yards away, came after Monte Vista’s Rob Howard tied the score, 9-9.
Rancho Buena Vista (8-14) led, 7-5, after two quarters but was outscored, 5-2, in the second half. Monte Vista goalie Mike Taggwerker made 29 saves, the fourth-highest total in a game in Section history.
The semifinals will be played today, with all four matches at Mesa College. Monte Vista (11-5) will play second-seeded University of San Diego High School (20-4) at 6:15 p.m.
In other first-round matches Friday, Poway (18-5) defeated Escondido (13-8), 19-3, and will play top-seeded Coronado (20-5) today at 1; Mount Miguel (13-7) defeated Mira Mesa (11-5), 22-10, and will play Valhalla (19-8) at 2:45, and Fallbrook (17-9-1) defeated Bonita Vista (12-8-1), 17-5, and will play Helix (15-4) at 4:30.
