A skyscraper towering over Pretoria will be the new center of South Africa’s$8.5 billion-a-year gold trade. The $60-million structure is the new headquarters of the South African Reserve Bank, which sells the 640 tons of bullion mined every year by the world’s biggest gold producer. The 500-foot tall tower, made of black granite and reflecting glass, is the tallest in Pretoria and bank officials say it will be among the world’s most advanced central banks, with sophisticated computers and gold and foreign exchange dealing facilities. Security will be extra tight to protect $2.5 billion in gold bars and coins in vaults under the building.
