At least 12 people were killed and a number were injured in gun battles as Pakistanis voted for local council posts, police and residents reported. The nationwide municipal elections, being held on a non-party basis, were the first since President Zia ul-Haq ended more than eight years of martial law in 1985. In violence believed to be election related, deaths were reported in the provinces of Punjab, Sind and North West Frontier.
