Officials announced development of a chemical, made in part from orange and lemon rinds, for use in the electronics industry that could reduce pollution contributing to the depletion of Earth’s ozone layer. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated that, by using this chemical for cleaning printed circuit boards and wiring boards instead of chlorofluorocarbons and chlorinated solvents, about 10% of the ozone-depleting substances could be eliminated worldwide and 20% in the United States. William Galloway, chief executive officer of Petroferm Inc., said at a Washington news conference that his firm developed the product called Bioact EC-7 in a cooperative program with American Telephone & Telegraph Co.
