OMAHA — A California-to-Chicago Zephyr train carrying 250 people today ran a red light and collided with a freight train near a bridge over the Missouri River to Iowa, slightly injuring 14 people, officials said.
Federal rail authorities said an Amtrak crew member confirmed that the Zephyr went through a red stop signal, a source close to the investigation told United Press International.
The Zephyr, bound for Chicago from Oakland, Calif., had headed southbound out of the Omaha station when it collided with the northbound Burlington Northern freight, nipping the 46th car of the 52-car train, authorities said.
