The Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant in Haddam, Conn., was operating smoothly despite a strike by unionized security guards, Northeast Utilities officials said. The guards, employees of Burns International Services, voted, 42 to 3, Saturday to reject a proposed three-year contract they contended was designed to break their union and went on strike at midnight. Connecticut Yankee is one of four nuclear power plants in the state. The guards set up picket lines in front of the plant, but no trouble was reported. Officials of Local 538 of United Plant Guard Workers of America said the strike is over Burns’ attempt to eliminate the automatic payroll deduction for union dues and the requirement that all guards join the union.
