Dan Smith sparked a Newbury Park rally with a home run, double and six runs batted in as the Panthers split a nonleague doubleheader with Agoura on Saturday at Newbury Park.
The Chargers defeated Newbury Park, 8-5, before the Panthers routed them in the second game, 22-0.
Smith, who was 3 for 5 in the second game, also scored two runs and keyed a 22-hit Panther attack. With Newbury Park leading, 8-0, the Panthers (12-11) scored six in the fifth inning and eight in the sixth.
Newbury Park’s Tim Beal pitched a four-hit shutout in going the distance for the win.
In the first game, Josh Smaler hit a first-inning grand slam to key a seven-run Agoura rally. Pitcher Scott Heflin, who gave up 11 hits in going the distance, added a two-run double.
The Chargers (4-5-2) had six hits and committed one error in the first game.
Rio Mesa 8, Santa Barbara 5--Dmitri Young went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and stole two bases to lead the Spartans to a Channel League victory at Santa Barbara.
The Spartans (14-6-1, 7-2-1) came back from a 5-4 deficit to win with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Crespi 13, Palisades 6--John Dempsey was 2 for 4 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in the consolation semifinal game of the Palos Verdes-Redondo tournament at Palisades.
Dempsey gave Crespi (11-9) a 1-0 lead in the first inning and was robbed of another RBI in the third when Palisades right fielder Damon Hale leaped above the fence in right to snare his drive.
Greg Barton was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI and Mark Cavaretta was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs as Crespi advanced to the consolation final against West Torrance on Saturday.
West Torrance 7, Alemany 3--The Indians missed a chance to win when they failed to score with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning of the consolation semifinal of the Palos Verdes-Redondo tournament at West Torrance.
Alemany (14-9) pounded out 11 hits but stranded nine runners, leaving Coach Jim Ozella frustrated.
“We just missed the opportunities to score,” Ozella said. “We got the guys in scoring position but didn’t score when we needed to.”
