GRAHAMSTOWN, South Africa — Two white police officers were convicted today of murdering a black youth after torturing him during an on-duty rampage.
Witnesses said 18-year-old Wheanut Stuurman, one of a group of young blacks arrested at random and tortured in a black township, was so badly injured that riot squad commander Leon de Villiers, 36, told Constable David Goosen, 26, he should be “taken out.” Goosen took the youth to a river bank, shot him through the neck and threw him into the water, the court was told. The two officers face a possible death penalty.
