Local News in Brief : Boy’s Father to Be Tried

Hacienda Heights physician Dr. Khalid Parwez, accused of strangling and dismembering his 11-year-old son and putting the remains in a dumpster, was ordered Thursday to stand trial in the boy’s murder.
Pomona Municipal Judge Robert A. Dukes ruled there was sufficient evidence to try Parwez, 38, in the killing after listening to testimony from about four dozen witnesses during a seven-week preliminary hearing.
The body parts of Raheel Parwez were found last Nov. 17 in a dumpster near an apartment allegedly rented to carry out the murder. The boy’s uncle, Sattar Ahmad, was also charged but remains at large.
Parwez, an immigrant from Pakistan, was involved in a bitter custody battle with his former wife, Amtul Parwez, at the time of the killing. Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard D. Burns III theorized that Parwez “potentially would have suffered a loss of face, both religiously and socially,” if his ex-wife got custody of Raheel and the couple’s other child.
