A moderate Afghan rebel leader, Sayed Ahmed Gailani, replaced fundamentalist Gulbuddin Hekmatyar as head of the seven-party Muslim guerrilla alliance battling Kabul and Soviet forces inside Afghanistan. He will head the alliance, based in Pakistan, for three months under its revolving leadership. Gailani is the leader of the Islamic National Revolutionary Front, one of three smaller moderate parties in the alliance.
