WIMBLEDON, England — Ivan Lendl survived a match point in the 14th game of the fifth set and went on to defeat unseeded Mark Woodforde of Australia today and keep alive his dream of a Wimbledon title.
Lendl, the top seed who has never won the tournament he craves the most, downed Woodforde 7-5, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8 in a match that took 4 hours, 46 minutes. Meanwhile, Chris Evert struggled into the fourth round, rallying from a set down to beat 19-year-old American Katrina Adams. Defending men’s champion Pat Cash and women’s top seed Steffi Graf also advanced in straight sets. But fifth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini was upset by Zina Garrison of Houston.
