Camarillo, Westlake Win in First Round

Gil Valencia was 2 for 2 with three runs batted to lead the Camarillo American Legion team to a 7-2 win over Royal in the first round of the Gene Waid Memorial Classic on Friday at Rio Mesa High.
Valencia singled home two runs to highlight a five-run second and hit a solo home run in the fourth. Left-hander Charlie Constintine pitched a complete-game seven-hitter for Camarillo (14-2).
In other first-round games, Westlake defeated Ventura, 4-3, behind a two-hitter by right-hander Bob Grandpre (3-1); Culver City defeated Scottsdale, Ariz., Honda, 11-6; and the Scottsdale A’s downed Cherry Creek, Colo., 9-1.
In second-round action today, Royal plays Scottsdale Honda at 9 a.m., Camarillo plays Culver City at 11:30 and Westlake plays the Scottsdale A’s at 4:30 p.m.
