Sports Is Not Only Avenue for Excelling

Regarding the series (June 26-27) on pro football players’ longevity and the issue of responsibility to retired players:
By definition in our fad-oriented, wait-till-the-last-minute, money-driven culture, many players must lose when they leave professional sports. Football and boxing are special problems because of the physical injury potential.
The time to do a good job in dealing with the problems is when the athletes are young. That’s the time to provide a variety of reasons for existing.
One can be a great performer without sport being the only reason for existing. Unfortunately, in our make-a-break, take-a-pill society, steroid use is a natural development.
