Jackson and the Democrats in Atlanta

In watching former President Jimmy Carter’s address, my faith was renewed in the genuine decency of the man. Since leaving office nearly eight years ago, he has supported and worked for a number of worthy causes which have not given him a high profile.

Then I reflected on another genuinely decent man--a former Republican President--who was elected 60 years ago. Herbert Hoover, like Carter, was a one-term President (voters defeated both on their second try). Also like Carter, he was held up to scorn and ridicule by the opposition party for many years after he left office, to the point where the word “Hoover” was almost a pejorative for two decades.

However Harry Truman--a Democrat--restored Republican Hoover to his rightful place in history by naming him to head the Hoover Commission on efficiency in government.

Will some future Republican President extend a quid pro quo by naming President Carter to some high post?
