RAILROAD FLAT, Calif. — Firefighters Friday neared containment of two arson fires that charred more than 12,500 acres, destroyed six homes and inflicted an estimated $3.8 million in damage to drought-parched Calaveras County since Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Gov. George Deukmejian offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for igniting the fire.
Deukmejian said he decided to offer the reward after being informed by state and local fire officials that the two major fires, near Railroad Flat, were caused by arson.
Deukmejian also signed a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in Calaveras County.
