Bill on Tax Law Flaws Advances

Associated Press

The Senate Finance Committee today stripped away all issues of controversy and unanimously approved a bill correcting hundreds of errors in the 1986 tax overhaul law.

The chairman, Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.), won quick approval of the bill by promising colleagues that the committee staff will attempt to put together a separate package of their favorite unrelated tax provisions that could be offered as an amendment when the bill reaches the Senate floor, perhaps in September. Most of the bill is designed to correct mistakes in the 1986 law, but there is a new provision which would exempt farmers and some other diesel users from paying tax on fuel used for off-road purposes.
