Rain fell in the drought-stricken Ohio Valley and central plains and cooler air brought brief relief to the Midwest. Thunderstorms were scattered from western New York state through southern Ohio into western Kentucky with more than an inch of rain drenching Louisville and Cleveland, the National Weather Service said. Showers and thunderstorms doused eastern Kansas along with the northern and central parts of Idaho, areas hit hard by the country’s worst drought in 50 years. The mass of cold air that descended from Canada produced winds of 66 m.p.h. in Livingston, Mont.
