An elderly invalid attempting to cross a busy street in a motorized cart was struck and fatally injured Friday by a car whose driver didn’t see him in the intersection, authorities said.
Dale Clark Gleason, 72, of Santa Ana was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was taken following the 2:50 p.m. accident at 17th Street and Cherry Lane, Santa Ana police said.
Gleason was steering his motorized cart through a crosswalk across the six lanes of 17th Street, Santa Ana Police Lt. Greg Cooper said. Before Gleason could get across, the red light for opposing traffic turned to green.
Traffic in two lanes on that side of the street remained stopped for Gleason to cross, but a motorist traveling in the lane closest to the curb failed to see the cart and struck it, Cooper said. The driver of the car was not cited.
