The World : Afghan Rebels Down Plane, Killing 16

Afghan guerrillas shot down an Afghan military transport aircraft, killing 16 people, two of them generals, Kabul Radio reported. The radio said the Soviet-built Antonov 32 twin-turboprop plane was hit by a Stinger anti-aircraft missile near the northern town of Kunduz while on a flight from Kabul. In Moscow, a Soviet Foreign Ministry spokesman denied a report by Pakistani authorities Wednesday that an Afghan plane had been shot down over Pakistan. It said that Afghan planes did not bomb Pakistani villages, did not violate Pakistan’s airspace and could not have been shot down there. It urged an impartial investigation.
