2 From S.D. County Up For Teacher-of-the-Year Award

Two San Diego County teachers are among eight semifinalists for 1989 California Teacher of the Year, the state Department of Education announced Monday in Sacramento.
They are Joan L. McCollom, San Diego Unified, and Joe Alfonso Smith, Ramona Unified.
The eight semifinalists, chosen from nominees from throughout the state’s 58 counties, will be narrowed to four finalists, one of whom will be named teacher of the year about Nov. 14.
Two other semifinalists come from Orange County. They are Shirley Bebereia, Santa Ana Valley High School in the Santa Ana Unified School District, and Katherine Emiko Schymick, Lexington Junior High in Cypress, part of the Anaheim Joint Union High School District.
The other four semifinalists are: Sharon Baker, Sacramento City Unified; Victoria Engbrect, William S. Hart Union High School District, Los Angeles County; Steven Fairbank, Paso Robles Joint Union High School District, San Luis Obispo County, and Jenlane Gee, Empire Union High School District, Modesto.
The semifinalists were chosen from Teacher of the Year nominees in all 58 counties.
