An elderly man was killed Wednesday when his car ran off Silverado Canyon Road and struck a tree, authorities said.
Hector Cornelio, 76, of Newbury Park, a suburb of Thousand Oaks in Ventura County, was pronounced dead at the scene, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Authorities said Cornelio was eastbound on Silverado Canyon Road about 7:15 a.m. when his car swerved from the road into a grove of trees about a mile east of Black Star Canyon Road.
The car was estimated to have been traveling about 50 m.p.h, CHP Officer Mike Lundquist said. It has not been determined if Cornelio lost control of the car, Lundquist said.
Authorities have also not determined where Cornelio was headed. Silverado Canyon Road is well-traveled and often used by motorists to get from Mission Viejo to the Costa Mesa Freeway, Lundquist said.
