CAMPAIGN ’88 : Lowe Boosts Crowds

That high-pitched sound that accompanied Democratic Sen. Lloyd Bentsen through East Texas on Thursday was the excited squeal of star-struck teen-age girls.
Not that the 67-year-old senator had suddenly caught on with the perm-and-mousse set. Word had gotten out that actor Rob Lowe was aboard the campaign bus.
One fan, waiting patiently for the senator’s party to emerge from a diner in the town of Dangerfield, confided: “I just couldn’t care less about Bentsen.”
“There’s no doubt that some of these people are turning out to see celebrities,” Lowe conceded. “I don’t care why they come out. As long as they are there, they are going to hear the message.”
