GOOD ADVERTISING

In “Off the Wall on Madison Avenue” (by Sean Mitchell, Sept. 18), Jay Chiat of Chiat / Day was quoted as saying: “I think everyone in advertising has questions about the superficiality of what we do. But we try to do great work.”
Advertising is what drives American business. I think Jay Chiat would agree that any reputable advertising agency is committed to economic growth through promotion of reputable products that enhance progress. A good agency promotes these products in a memorable, fun way that shapes opinions. And I honestly believe that most people in advertising don’t question the superficiality of what they do.
It’s time the advertising industry received a favorable awareness by the general public. I am glad you finally featured an article on an industry great. But why did you highlight this particular quote? If Jay Chiat really believes this, you burst my bubble.
