The U.S. Gymnastics Federation said it will distribute $1 million over the next 4 years to the nation’s top artistic and rhythmic gymnasts to help defray living and training expenses.
In 1989, top male and female gymnasts will each receive $16,000. That amount will increase $1,000 a year until 1992, when athletes will receive $20,000 for training. Fourteen other male and female gymnasts, plus an unspecified number of rhythmic gymnasts, will receive from $8,000 to $14,000 for 1989, with amounts increasing by $500 to $1,000 each year.
