An Eagle Rock teen-ager who injured his right knee in Malibu Creek State Park while jumping from rock to rock was rescued Saturday after huddling for about 8 hours in the cold, authorities said.
Kelly Dalton, 15, was “rock-hopping” Friday about 1 1/2 miles from the entrance of the park with two friends when he slipped and fell, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Jim Glazar. Since Dalton was unable to walk, one of his companions, Jay Spangler, 26, of Agoura, went for help about 5:30 p.m. while Raymond Olmedo, 18, of Eagle Rock stayed with Dalton, Glazar said.
Spangler returned with a Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team, but its seven members could not reach the two hikers because of poor visibility and heavy brush, Glazar said. Firefighters using a helicopter with powerful spotlights found Dalton and Olmedo about 1:30 a.m., he said.
By that time, the pain in Dalton’s knee had subsided and he was able to walk, Glazar said. Dalton did not require hospitalization, he said.
