Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Advances in Soccer Playoffs

Shaun Jarrard and Tom Van Betten gave Orange Coast College a 2-0 halftime lead and OCC went on to a 3-2 victory over East Los Angeles in the first round of the Southern California men’s soccer playoffs Saturday at Orange Coast.
John Bovetas scored in the second half for OCC (17-4-4), which plays Rancho Santiago at a date and site to be determined, with the winner advancing to the state championships next weekend at Chabot College.
In the College of the Desert men’s basketball tournament:
Rancho Santiago 86, College of the Desert 63--Tommy Villanueva scored 18 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Rancho Santiago (4-2) in the third-place game. Gene Altamirano added 14 and Mike Oden 12 for Rancho Santiago, which trailed at the half, 40-38. Tony Smalley scored 10 for the Dons.
In the Saddleback tournament:
Saddleback 82, Grossmont 78--Vincent Mason scored 24 points and Sean Keyes 22 to lead Saddleback in the third-place game. Pasadena defeated Moorpark, 78-62, in the championship game.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Orange Coast 82, San Diego Mesa 48--Dareck Crane scored 20 points and Scott DeStefano 16 for host OCC (5-1). Chip Halon added 14 for OCC, which led, 44-25, at the half.
