Valeri Lozik beat two swimmers who had finished ahead of him for medals at the Seoul Olympics and led the Soviet Union to the men’s team title in the European Cup swimming meet at Edinburgh, Scotland.
East Germany won the women’s title for the ninth year in a row, as Grit Mueller and Anja Eichorst won their second titles of the 2-day short-course meet.
Lozik, a fifth-place finisher in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Olympics, finished first in 2 minutes 12.55 seconds, beating Olympic silver medalist Nick Gillingham of Britain and bronze medalist Sergio Lope of Spain.
Mueller won the women’s 400 freestyle in 4:09.55, and Eichorst took the 200 backstroke in 2:14.10. In Friday’s opening session, Mueller won the 400 individual medley and Eichorst won the 100 backstroke.
