KATMANDU, Nepal — King Birendra of Nepal has granted permission to his younger brother, Prince Dhirendra, to renounce his royal title and its privileges, the royal palace announced Tuesday.
Dhirendra, 40, submitted a petition to the king on Dec. 8 “seeking permission of his own free will to renounce the title,” the palace said.
The palace gave no reason for Dhirendra’s move. He was fifth in line of succession to the throne.
