Wayne Fontes, who put some spark into the Detroit Lions during a 5-week interim coaching stint, was given a 3-year contract Thursday.
Fontes, 48, a National Football League assistant coach for 13 seasons, was given the interim job after Darryl Rogers and offensive coordinator Bob Baker were fired. He guided the club to a 2-3 record, beating the Green Bay Packers twice. The Lions finished the 1988 season 4-12 and out of the playoffs for a fifth straight year.
