Mike Ditka, who survived a midseason heart attack and numerous injuries to his Chicago Bears this season, was named Associated Press’ National Football League coach of the year. Marv Levy of the Buffalo Bills finished second in balloting, and Sam Wyche of the Cincinnati Bengals was third.
