Local News in Brief : Mother Sentenced for Abandoning Baby
- Share via
A 16-year-old mother who abandoned her newborn daughter in a garbage can for four days has been sentenced to at least three months at a county-run work camp.
In imposing the sentence, Long Beach Juvenile Court Judge Victor Barrera disagreed with a probation officer’s recommendation that the girl be allowed to return home to her family.
The young mother pleaded guilty to an attempted murder charge Dec. 22. County prosecutors said her naked newborn daughter survived four nights without food or water after being abandoned in a garbage can near the mother’s Carson home in October.
The crying infant was discovered by a 17-year-old relative and taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for treatment of hypothermia and dehydration. The child was later listed in good condition.
