General Electric’s profit rose 16% to $3.386 billion for 1988. Sales, however, dipped 1% to $38.82 billion. The Fairfield, Conn., firm, whose businesses include consumer products, aircraft engines, financial services, plastics, medical systems and broadcasting, said most of its businesses showed productivity gains.
