Oregon state workers in “shock, grief and some fear” returned to work at the Oregon Department of Corrections in Salem under new tight security measures following the stabbing death of Director Michael Francke. “It would be only prudent if we consider ourselves to be in some degree of danger,” said Richard Peterson, interim director of the department. State police officers were stationed outside the building that houses the department and employees were told not to work alone and take precautions to protect themselves going to and from work. Oregon State Police said there are few clues and no suspects in the death, which has been ruled a homicide.
