Brazil Opens 1st Section of Disputed Railway

SAO PAULO, Brazil — The nation’s north-south railway, the most controversial project launched by President Jose Sarney, began operating on its first 62-mile stretch over the weekend, officials said.
The $2.44-billion railway is to link Sarney’s home state of Maranhao in the northeast to Luziania in the central state of Goias. It is intended to help develop the agricultural potential of central Brazil, but the 1,000-mile project has been surrounded by charges of corruption from the beginning.
