Interviews with mechanics and pilots at Eastern show that the issue is not simply money, but the fact that money is the only thing Lorenzo understands. He thinks airline mechanics are replaceable. I, for one, don’t relish the idea of riding on a plane maintained by a strikebreaker--for reasons of my own safety. Obviously, the pilots tend to feel the same way.

Running an airline is a little like being a doctor or a teacher. It shouldn’t be done purely for money. The airline may or may not be unprofitable but if you are going to run it at all you have to do it right. You can’t do it right if your only interest is mergers and acquisitions and stocks. If you don’t love the airline business for itself, you should get out of it.
