BOGOTA, Colombia — About 20 attackers wielding machine guns disarmed guards at a prison in northern Colombia and freed nine inmates including convicted drug smugglers, police said Sunday.
Police mounted a dragnet for those freed Saturday from Marinilla Prison, about 30 miles east of the city of Medellin.
Leaders of the Medellin cartel drug-smuggling ring may have masterminded the breakout since low-ranking members of the ring were among the escapees, police added.
