NEW YORK — A boy playing on a South Bronx street stepped on a piece of carpet covering an open manhole and plunged 10 feet into a storm sewer, where he drowned, officials said today.
Jesus Cortez, 8, was playing on a pier at a dead-end street about 6 p.m. Sunday when he fell into the storm sewer, spokesmen for police and firefighters said. A firefighter brought the boy to the surface but rescuers could not revive the child.
