Longshot Clark Burroughs eagled the 13th hole and shot a career-best, eight-under-par 64 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the Canadian Open Championship at Oakville, Canada.
Burroughs, 26, who hasn’t had a top-10 finish in three years on the PGA Tour, had a total of 199 on the Glen Abbey Golf Club course in Ontario.
He started the day four strokes back but achieved a five-shot swing on the 13th hole to pass second-round leader Steve Jones.
Burroughs ran in a 20-foot eagle putt on the 13th for an eagle three. Jones, playing behind him, put his three-iron second shot into Sixteen Mile Creek, took five to reach the green and three-putted for a triple bogey.
From one stroke in front, Jones suddenly was four behind.
But Jones, who won the first two tournaments of the season, came back with birdies on the last three holes and had a 70 that left him two shots back going into today’s final round.
Jim Gallagher shot a 71 and was tied for third place at 203 with Lon Hinkle, whose last victory came 10 years ago in the World Series of Golf.
“Just like the old days,” Hinkle said after his 66.
Mark Calcavecchia, a two-time winner this season, was next at 204 after a 68.
Dan Halldorson, attempting to become the first Canadian in 35 years to win his country’s national championship, had a bogey-free 67 and was tied at 205 with Bruce Lietzke, David Ogrin and Larry Silveira.
Lietzke, twice a Canadian Open winner, had a 67. Ogrin shot a 68, and Silveira had a 69.
Curtis Strange, only three strokes off the pace entering the third round, had an erratic 72 that included a double bogey on the first hole, three bogeys and five birdies.
Strange, who successfully defended his U.S. Open title in Rochester, N.Y., a week ago, was at 206. Also at that figure were Jack Nicklaus, who shot a 69, and Lee Trevino, who had a 70.
Dick Hendrickson tied the Senior PGA Tour record for the lowest 36-hole score, shooting his second straight six-under-par 66 to take a four-stroke lead in the second round at Syracuse, N.Y.
Hendrickson, seeking his first title since joining the tour in 1985, was at 132.
His 12-under-par total matched the record set in May by Bob Charles at the Commemorative Tournament on a par-70 course.
Phil Rodgers and Harold Henning were tied for second place at 136. Rodgers started the day with a triple bogey, then made nine birdies for a 66. Henning shot a 68.
Jim Dent was next at 137, one stroke ahead of Gene Littler, Walter Zembriski and J.C. Goosie.
Shirley Furlong finished with four straight birdies for a five-under-par 66 and a four-stroke lead in the rain-delayed LPGA McDonald’s tournament at Wilmington, Del.
Furlong was at 201 after 54 holes on the sodden 6,366-yard Du Pont Country Club course.
Play was halted twice by rain, the second time for 2 hours 42 minutes. The final threesome finished play just before dark.
Betsy King, the second-round leader, could only match par with a 71 and dropped to second at 205.
Pat Bradley also shot a 71 and was tied for third at 206 with Deborah McHaffey, who shot a69.
Six strokes back was 50-year-old JoAnne Carner, who shot her best round of the year, a 66.
