RELIGION : Pope Repeats Views Hit by Jews

VATICAN CITY — Pope John Paul II today repeated views that have been condemned by a U.S.-based Jewish organization as prejudicial to Jews.
The Pope, speaking at his weekly general audience, implied that the Jewish covenant with God had been broken and superseded by the Christian covenant.
He told several thousand pilgrims that God created “a new covenant” with his people through Christ because of “Israel’s infidelity to its God.” He made the comment in Italian and then repeated it in English.
The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith has written to the Vatican seeking “urgent clarification” of similar remarks made at last week’s audience.
