The City Council has approved a five-year, $2.4-million contract with Waste Management of Sun Valley Inc. to provide residential garbage collection and recycling.
The company will begin serving residential customers Sept. 1, with the city’s new recycling program to begin on a limited basis early next year, public works Director Chuck Bergson said.
The company will service single-family homes and apartment units where trash containers of 45 gallons or less are used, Bergson said.
About 20 other waste disposal companies continue to contract with businesses and large apartment buildings for commercial pickups in West Hollywood. In July, however, those companies were required to have city licenses for the first time.
For years, West Hollywood residents have complained about noisy garbage trucks in neighborhoods during prohibited hours and of streets strewn with garbage mishandled by carriers.
