Commissioner Bart Giamatti turned down a request to consider reinstating Shoeless Joe Jackson to major league baseball, saying he did not “wish to play God with history.”
Jackson, who died in 1951 at age 63 in his native South Carolina, was one of eight Chicago White Sox players banned from baseball for their part in the 1919 “Black Sox Scandal.”
