One person died in a fiery three-vehicle accident Thursday night on the Golden State Freeway about 10 miles north of Frazier Park, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The accident, which occurred about 8 p.m., involved a semitrailer truck loaded with rolled wire, a passenger car and a rental truck.
When police arrived, the truck was engulfed in flames in the center divider. The driver was severely injured and taken by ambulance to Bakersfield, said CHP Sgt. Ron Lagrande.
The passenger car contained a body that was too severely burned to identify, said Officer Andy Gutierrez.
Lagrande said the semitrailer brakes appeared to have overheated as the truck descended the northbound slope of the Grapevine. Witnesses said the brakes were shooting flames before the crash.
Traffic was halted in both directions for at least two hours as the CHP investigated and debris was cleared.
