Giorgio Lamberti of Italy broke the European record in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.24 seconds at the European Swimming Championships in Bonn, West Germany. Lamberti, who set a world record of 1:46.69 in the 200 freestyle Tuesday, broke the record of 49.35 set by Stephan Caron of France in 1987.
Anke Moehring of East Germany set a European record of 4 minutes 5.84 seconds to win the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle. Moehring bettered the mark of 4:05.94 posted by Heike Friedrich of East Germany while taking the silver medal in the 1988 Olympics at Seoul.
