Ex-Rep. Jenrette Gets 30-Day Term in Theft of Necktie and Shoes

From Associated Press

Former Rep. John Jenrette was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail and fined $2,000 for stealing a necktie and shoes from a department store.

The former South Carolina Democratic congressman was also placed on two years of probation and was ordered to do 200 hours of community service and to continue psychiatric and alcoholism treatment.

“I apologize to the court,” Jenrette said. “I can only say that I’ll never be back. Why I let this happen, I don’t know. I’ve totally wiped out all of my income and have lost all hopes of getting my law license back.”

Jenrette, 53, served 13 months in prison after he was convicted in 1980 of bribery in the Abscam affair. He is still on probation from that conviction.
