Israeli officials cautiously welcomed a proposal by U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III for a meeting of U.S., Israeli and Egyptian officials aimed at keeping the Mideast peace process alive. Yosef Ben-Aharon, an aide to Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, said the triangular talks could be a way to “keep the ball rolling” in the effort to arrange Palestinian elections. But he cautioned that Israel would not accept an outcome that would be a cover for bringing the Palestine Liberation Organization to the negotiating table. The meeting that Baker suggested would choose a panel of Palestinians to work out the details of elections proposed by Israel in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
