Villa Park Beats Canyon, Gains Tie for Century Title

ORANGE — Villa Park High School clinched a tie with Santa Ana for the Century League football title with a 28-14 victory over Canyon at El Modena High School Friday.
Villa Park (7-3, 4-1) scored on its first possession, when Gary Bladow had a one-yard run to cap a seven-play drive and make the score 7-0 with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter.
Canyon (3-7, 1-4) tied it with 3:50 left in the quarter when linebacker Jason Rogers blocked James Hong’s punt and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.
Villa Park regained the lead with 4:05 left in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Ryan Smith. Ted Burnette kicked the extra point again to make the score 14-7.
With 1:11 left in the first half, Canyon tied again on a two-yard run by Fred Velez and Chris Snitko again kicked the extra point.
Villa Park scored two second-half touchdowns, one by Bladow (149 yards in 40 carries) and the other by James Hong.
