WORLD IN BRIEF : UNITED NATIONS : 59 States Sign Pact on Rights of Child

Representatives of 59 countries signed a convention on children’s rights after it was opened for signature. Parties to the convention, which enters into force after being ratified by 20 states, are required to respect and protect a wide range of children’s rights. The 54-article convention draws together key provisions of existing declarations and breaks new ground on adoption, survival, protection from sexual exploitation and drug abuse.
